Abstracting Aldo: Creating a Contemporary Commemorative for UniFirst's Headquarter Expansion
Updated: Jun 3, 2020
When it came to adding contemporary design and the perfect finishing touches and supergraphics to a headquarter expansion, UniFirst turned to White Light Visual for the kind of sophisticated execution only a few agencies can handle. The focal point: To honor Aldo Croatti, the company's founder who led the busines for 54 years, in a dramatic way in the new lobby of the Corporate Headquarters in Wilmington, MA. The complicated execution centered on simple portrait image of Aldo with his telltale kind smile and large glasses. Working with the image, White Light Visual created a grayscale then a mosaic of dots, assigning solid gray values to correlate to the grayscale, then carefully sizing the dots and spacing of the dots to yield a delicate balance of abstraction and likeness when viewed from different distances and angles entering and traveling through the lobby. In the space, a 1" dot and 5/8" spacing turned out to strike the right amount of magic and turn the 2-dimensional one-of-a-kind applique to life. The addition of 1/2" thick Pantone 339 green acrylic elements containing the founder's name lent just the right amount of finish to the installation.
Above the abstract on an overhead soffit, White Light Visual complied his handwritten notes into an early tenant of the company's brand and applied an adhesive vinyl skin to the entire soffit for a seamless presentation that can be seen from both the floor of the lobby as well as through the glass of the spacious human resources workspaces above. Utlizing colors and textures from the interior design palette, executed along with the architecture of the expansion designed by SV Design of North Beverly, MA, White Light Visual created and installed a branding Word Wall and green corrugate metal backdrop for common areas in the stylized space.
